Painting Your Furniture In 5 Easy Steps

Painting Your Furniture In 5 Easy Steps

  1. Sand down your piece of furniture. You want to make sure you don’t leave any grit on the surface, to ensure the paint goes on smooth.
  2. You want to coat your piece of furniture in an oil based primer. Try to create an even coat, and be aware of how much you are putting on the surface. You don’t want it too thick. Wait until that dries before moving to step three
  3. Depending on what furniture piece you are painting will determine what type of brush you use. If you are painting a big piece of furniture, we recommend using a foam paint roller versus a paint brush. You be the judge.  Apply two coats of latex paint semi-gloss to the surface and let dry.
  4. This is an optional step but some people like to add hand painted art to their painted furniture pieces. Try going to your local arts and crafts store to find stencils and different shades of paint (get paint that can be used for indoor/outdoor). Lay the stencil out on the surface and trace a pencil around it. Fill in the hand drawn stencil shape with paint of your choice.
  5. Finally wait at least 72 hours before placing anything on the surface of your furniture piece. Sometimes different weather patterns and climates have an effect on the paint. If you have the patience try waiting up to five days before placing anything on the surface of your furniture.

*If your furniture piece is anything besides wood, it is best to go to a hardware store and ask an expert about different kinds of paint they recommend using and why.
