Cleaning Your Upholstered Furniture In 9 EASY Steps

  1. You will want to remove all cushions.
  2. Use a vacuum attachment to gently remove dust and any loose debris from the surface of the fabric. You want to make sure you are vacuuming the entire surface of the furniture. This includes the back, front, arms, skirt, etc.
  3. Get a bowl and add ¼ cup of laundry detergent with 1 cup of warm warm (NOT HOT). Blend them together with a mixer until the texture becomes thick and looks like whipped cream.
  4. Make sure you test a small area on the back of the furniture. If fading or discoloration occurs, you will have to call a professional cleaning service.
  5. Pick an area on the fabric, dip a cloth into the laundry detergent and rub onto the dirty area.
  6. Wait a few minutes and then scrape away the suds on the fabric.
  7. Rinse the area with a damp cloth.
  8. Repeat steps 5-7 until satisfied with your upholstered furniture piece.
  9. Allow to dry overnight.

Try not to use too much water. Your first thought will be to dump as much water onto the stained area, but try to keep the area damp and not wet. If you notice only a small stain, use a damp cloth to wipe away the dirt or buy baby wipes and keep them handy. They work well on small areas. To prevent your furniture from getting dirty keep it out of the sunlight. The sun can give your furniture a faded and worn down look. Keep newspapers and magazines off your furniture so the ink doesn’t stain the fabric. Use a lint roller and try to vacuum every week to keep it looking clean. Remember to take it to a professional cleaning service if the tag is marked “dry clean only”. Follow these steps and your furniture will look brand new!
